Artist Statement

Caron Buckingham-Rhyder is a West Sussex based artist coming from a background as a qualified architect having worked abroad and around the country. 23 years ago she swapped the profession for raising a family and a new life running a successful outdoor education business. Creative urge prevailed and she attended several short courses followed by years at West Dean College on the DACC course graduating with distinction in 2024.

‘Structure’ and repetition plays an important part in her work and she experiments with paint, wood, wire, plaster and clay, with drawing always as a starting point. She is also a self-trained picture framer and sometimes frames form part of the work. Subject matter is often inspired by nature, whether it is animals, trees, or landscape and then exploring our human relationship to it.  There is often a narrative and strong message, mainly about loss or connection and she uses a combination of images together with colour, surface and geometry to enhance these elements.

Regularly selected for large exhibitions, details of solo and joint exhibitions and awards can be found on her website. She is currently working towards a solo show at the Oxmarket Gallery in August 2026.
